What is a genetic check-up, or genetic testing?

Much information relating to our health is hidden in our genes. Using genetic testing we can discover a lot of info regarding the patient. We can determine which diseases can possibly afflict the patient and what genes can be transferred to the children. Also, with individual genetic check-up we can learn which medicine are most effective for the patient and which have no effect, we can decipher the genetic code for a healthy life, can get useful info on what kind of diet should the patient practice and the required intensity of workouts and exercises to keep optimal weight and shape.

Genetic check-up from saliva samples

In the genetic check-up program the main role of a source plays the saliva sample. The cells in our saliva contain our DNA, same as all the other cells in our bodies. Saliva samples can be analyzed for close to 200 genes which are known to influence metabolism, exercising and the body’s energy. Analyzing these cells – which can be found in the brain, stomach, intestines, muscles and the pancreas, as well as those found in the bodily fats – we can better understand how the organism processes carbohydrates, fats, nutritious matter and vitamins.

Where can I do a genetic check-up?

Most of the larger local and regional hospitals have a center or a laboratory for genetic diagnostics and are equipped to do genetic testing. All you need to do is provide a saliva sample and fill-out a form containing details concerning your lifestyle. Specialists will make an assessment and make an individual report based on the data gathered from the results and the completed form concerning your lifestyle. This program will provide you with the knowledge of which genes your children can inherit, medicine which will not be effective for you, insight in your tendencies and predisposition towards certain diseases and conditions, as well as info on what you need in order to lead a healthy life.

How long is the procedure?

After the saliva sample has been supplied, it usually takes less than three weeks to get the results. On their basis, genetic specialists work out a report which is then presented to the patient. The patient receives advices and recommendations based on the report.

Confidentiality of personal data

The saliva samples are annulled after their processing in the laboratory. Usually the DNA extracted from the saliva is kept for one year and then abolished. Access to the results is only granted to the patient and the genetic specialists. The patient’s data is kept under strict confidentiality.

Who can do genetic check-ups?

Individual genetic check-ups are readily available to all individuals above 18 years of age in most countries in the world.
