How to Detox from Drugs

July 15, 2020 by Melissa Bell Leave a Comment

Prolonged use of substances such as drugs and alcohol usually leads to disease causing toxins and harmful substances to build up. Over time, this will affect a person’s health. These toxins harm organs like the liver and kidneys, causing various diseases and ailments.

Naturally, the body acts to rid itself of toxins but this can be further enhanced with a proper help. This help will usually include reducing the toxin causing activities and taking substances specially designed to aid in this cleansing process called detoxification.

What is Detoxification?

Detoxification or undergoing detox is the process of removing waste, unwanted and harmful substances out of your body. It includes eating a proper diet, exercising, taking supplements, stopping drugs and alcohol use and generally living a healthy lifestyle. Doing all these complements and enhances the body’s natural detoxification process, speeding up your recovery.

Going through the process of withdrawal and detox can take days or even months depending on factors such as:

  • Type of substance or drug a person is addicted to;
  • Frequency and length of the usage;
  • Underlying health conditions;
  • Degree of addiction;
  • Method of intake;
  • Genetic makeup;
  • Family history.

The amount of time any drug will stay in your body varies based on factors like your sex, age, weight, the dosage used and how healthy you are. With prolonged use, it may be difficult to estimate how long it will take to get rid of it from your system.

For those who want to undergo a drug test, there is a need for a complete detoxification to remove any trace of the substance. Though there is some hope with this method, the best way to pass any drug test is to avoid taking it until your doctor tells you that you are clean. You can check out The Drug Test Detox website or similar pages where you can get more information.

How Do You Go Through A Detox?

Quitting substance abuse by yourself can be difficult so it is often recommended that professional and medical help be sought. Detox can either be medical or natural although most times, getting medical help is the way to go. There are however other forms or levels of detoxification you can undergo. Some places offer support but may not be equipped medically to manage substance withdrawal.

Detox can either take place in an inpatient or outpatient facility depending on how severe the addiction is and also if there are other health conditions present. You should understand that when you have started a process of detoxification, going through with it is essential and this is why you need supervision as a discontinuation of the process can be fatal.

What are the Processes Involved?

Detoxification is not a one-size-fits-all process as each person has their unique problems and issues to deal with. Given this, there is usually a tailor-made treatment routine for each person. Starting personalized treatments usually include these steps:

Evaluation

A patient’s blood is tested to know the amount of substance present in their system. They also undergo mental and physical health screening to determine the state of their mind and body. In addition to this, there is a review of medical history, drugs, and medication use, etc. All these will be used to determine the kind of treatment and medications needed as well as the plan for treatment.

Stabilization

After an evaluation is carried out, the individual is then stabilized through medical, psychological and, if need be, physiological therapy. This will form a basis for the treatment, preventing any harm to the patient. At this point, medications may be prescribed to help with symptoms of withdrawal.

Preparing for Treatment

At this stage, the physician intimates and prepares the patient for the kind of treatment needed, its length, and what to generally expect.

Side Effects

Withdrawing from drugs can be tough and it takes a lot of mental and physical strength. Depending on the level of addiction, you may have to see a physician before trying to detox by yourself. It can be very painful and if not handled properly can be dangerous. This is why is it is essential to seek medical help rather than trying to do it all by yourself

It is also possible to experience withdrawal symptoms such as

  • Nausea
  • Headaches
  • Vomiting
  • Tremors
  • Agitation
  • Restlessness, etc.

Conclusion

If you will like to pass a drug test, the first step is to abstain from using it and if you already do, you should seek medical help to undergo treatment and cleanse your system of the substance. Avoid stopping the use of a drug abruptly as this can be very detrimental but follow medical advice. A detox may be a hard, long process but in the end, it rewards you with a healthy body.
